Since March 2016, I am head of the Database Systems Group at the Department of Computer Science at Ludwig-Maximilians-Universität (LMU) Munich.


From Sept 2002 to Feb 2016, I headed the Data Management and Data Exploration group as a full professor at the Department of Computer Science, RWTH Aachen University. From Jan to Sep 2015, I acted as head of the Department of Computer Science (Sprecher der Fachgruppe Informatik), and I chaired the Examination Board of Computer Science (Vorsitzender des Prüfungsausschuss Informatik) from April 2012 to December 2014.

Research Topics - Forschungsgebiete

  • Data Mining: Subspace Clustering, Outlier Detection, Stream Data Mining, Anytime Mining Algorithms, Visual Data Mining.
  • Database Technology: Similarity Search, Content-based Multimedia Retrieval, Relational Indexing, Energy Efficiency in Mobile Databases.

Short Bio

Thomas Seidl is a professor for computer science and head of the database systems group at LMU Munich. From 2002-2016 he headed the data management and data exploration group at RWTH Aachen University, Germany. His research interests include data mining and database technology for multimedia and spatio-temporal databases in engineering, communication and life science applications. Prof. Seidl received his Diplom (MSc) in 1992 from TU Muenchen and his PhD (1997) and venia legendi (2001) from LMU Muenchen.
